Pacific Island Indigenous Food Poster (167 kb)
Pacific Island Indigenous Food Poster is the fourth in a series by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment, and the International Development Research Centre. The Island Food Community of Pohnpei assisted in its development. It focuses on issues of biodiversity, nutrition/health, taste, economics and availability.
Pohnpei (Kipar/Deipw en Pohnpei/Helehelu): Carotenoid-Rich Varieties Poster (118 kb)
This poster presents photographs of 11 carotenoid-rich Pohnpei pandanus varieties, information on carotenoid content, and health benefits. Nine of the varieties were taken from Mwoakilloa Atoll and two were taken from Kapingamarangi Atoll.

This poster is used widely in the schools and has this message: Healthy meals include a variety of foods from each group.
No End to the Bananas (192 kb)
This 2-poster set on the importance of the diversity in bananas was produced by Biodiversity International. It shown in large exhibitions in Scotland, Ireland, England, and also in the United States in the lobby of the World Bank and at the Fairchild Botanical Gardens. The poster is a global poster with photos from around the world and includes two photos of Karat, one showing the flesh color differences between Karat and Utin Menihle and the other showing the large size of the finger and a Pohnpeian eating Karat. A smaller version of the poster was printed for use in Pohnpei to provide information on bananas and to show the international interest in Micronesia's Karat banana.
Beta-carotene Food Chart
This is a material that catches the interest of mothers. It shows the rich beta-carotene content of local foods and shows that rice contains none. Beta-carotene rich foods help protect against certain cancers, diabetes, heart disease, vitamin A deficiency and anemia. This material is in the Pohnpei language.
Pohnpei Bananas (Uht Kan en Pohnpei): Carotenoid-Rich Varieties Poster (224.5 kb)
This poster presents photographs of 15 yellow-fleshed carotenoid-rich Pohnpei banana varieties, information on classification and carotenoid content, and a message explaining the health benefits of growing and eating carotenoid-rich banana varieties. The A4 size laminated version is sold locally at US$1 per copy as fund-raising for IFCP.
Pohnpei Carotenoid-Rich Foods Poster (69 kb)
Pohnpei Carotenoid-Rich Foods Poster focuses on communicating the "Yellow Varieties Message". In particular, it presents photos and data that show that the orange, yellow-orange and yellow-fleshed banana varieties have higher beta-carotene content than white-fleshed varieties, and thus greater health benefits, and that all these foods are richer in comparison to rice, which contains no beta-carotene at all. Information on other carotenoid-rich foods, including giant swamp taro, seeded breadfruit, and pandanus, is also presented.

Island Food Community of Pohnpei Karat Postcard
This present a mother feeding her baby Karat with the following message: "Karat is rich in carotenoids and has important health benefits. Karat has a very unusual texture for a banana. It is very smooth and thus perfect for babies as their first food to complement breastmilk, at around six months."
Island Food Community of Pohnpei Taro (Mwahng) Postcard
This presents photographs and the following message: Giant swamp taro (mwahng), Cyrtosperma chamissonis, is an important staple food for Pohnpei. The corm (center) is rich in essential minerals, vitamins, carotenoids, and fiber, all important for health. Other distinctive parts of the plant include the flower (top left), leaves and stalks (lower right, showing different varieties). Note that the scientific name for mwahng has been changed to: Cyrtosperma merkusii.
Island Food Community of Pohnpei Pandanus Postcard (537 kb)
This presents a striking photograph of the Mwajak variety of pandanus, Pandanus tectorius, an important food of Pohnpei, especially the outer islands. The deep orange-fleshed varieties are rich in provitamin A carotenoids. They have important health benefits, protecting against certain cancers, heart disease, diabetes, vitamin A deficiency and anemia.

This presents the photograph of a man going out for net fishing and the following message: Setting a net to catch reef fish, a major food in Pohnpei. Fish is an excellent source of protein, several vitamins and minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids, which provide important health benefits.

This booklet presents photographs of 31 varieties of Pohnpei bananas as well as information on other banana varieties growing in Pohnpei. Postal Stamps
FSM Postal Stamps: Karat Series (80 kb)
This is a collaborative project with the FSM Philatelic Bureau, FSM Postal Services. These stamps include four stamps of Karat, the Pohnpei State Banana (show photo of the four stamps). They were issued as a Commemorative Series in 2005.
FSM Postal Stamps: Micronesian Banana Series (90 kb)
This is a collaborative project with the FSM Philatelic Bureau, FSM Postal Services. These stamps are a Definitive Series and include eight stamps, with one Pohnpei banana variety featured per stamp along with its name (show photo of the eight stamps).
